Master your webcam to unlock learner engagement and trust
26th May

Let's face it—the webcam has become an essential tool for all educators over the past several years. But here's what most people don't realise: research shows that the nature of your camera feed is significantly impacting the learning experience and outcomes for your learners.
Your. Face. Matters.
The reality is we have to master our webcams if we want to unlock learner engagement and trust. And I've done extensive research with learners to discover exactly how the way we come through on camera impacts their learning outcomes.
In this interactive 75-minute session, you'll discover practical, research-backed insights that are essential for all educators who appear on camera—whether that's in live online classes or pre-recorded videos. You'll learn tips and tricks you can immediately apply, regardless of what technology or equipment you have available.
While green screen won't be the main focus, I'll give you an overview of that technology (which is what you’re used to seeing me use). But regardless of what equipment you're using day to day, there are relevant insights in this webinar for anyone who appears on camera during live lectures and tutorials, and in those all-important pre-recorded videos.
BONUS: Get your copy of the 110-page Getting Started Guide for pro-level live feeds and efficiently created video content (one-take wonders with zero video editing required).

The learners we never get to meet: Research-backed strategies to support motivated learners who are stuck outside our digital doors
IN-PERSON EVENT: May 5-7 TDA Convention

The learners we never get to meet: Building practitioner capability to support motivated learners who are stuck outside our digital doors
IN-PERSON EVENT: May 13-15 AITD Conference (Brisbane)

We know that many of our adult learners experience digital skill barriers when engaging with training. What we don’t know is how many are prevented from even reaching us. One recent study found that 67% of adults motivated to work in aged care lacked the basic digital skills to even identify what training they need or find a training provider.
This newly available research exposes a fundamental gap in support strategies. While we invest heavily in digital orientation workshops and pre-course upskilling for enrolled learners, we're missing those who cannot navigate the initial steps of finding and accessing education. Our sophisticated support systems are invisible to learners who cannot complete basic internet searches or enrolment processes. They remain invisible, stuck on the outside, unable to access the very programs designed to support them.
Through direct observation of 100 aspiring adult learners and subsequent comparative studies, this research demonstrates that motivated, suitable candidates are being blocked by easily removable digital barriers. When learners were assisted through digital upskilling before course commencement, completion rates soared from 53% to 84%. The difference wasn't motivation—it was access to relevant digital skills.
In this session, you’ll gain practical, immediately implementable solutions including:
-
Effective screening approaches to identify digitally vulnerable learners
-
Communication methods that reach learners experiencing digital skill barriers
-
Reframing techniques that dramatically improve early engagement
These solutions don't require massive resource investment—they require thoughtful implementation of targeted interventions. As a researcher working directly with learners and practitioners across Australia, Dr Cox will share evidence-based strategies that remove invisible barriers while improving both learner success and educator effectiveness.
You will leave with actionable insights to reach the motivated learners currently stuck outside your digital doors, building your capability to transform potential into participation while dramatically improving completion rates.
